Z-DSPDSP card for granular process for You will need a Z-DSP to use. Grain de Folie uses 3,4 or 6 grains (small chunks of recorded audio) by algorithm. Each grain's playback time is called grain size and can be controlled by many algorithms.
Of the three parameter knobs of the Z-DSP, the leftmost (VC-DSP1) always controls sampling into the granular process. When the knob position is 0, the audio is always recorded and processed in real time. At 1-25% the audio is frozen and no new sampling occurs. At 26-100%, the audio is grainfed, and the more the knob goes to the right, the larger the feedback amount. The time tone of the high feedback amount increases the sense of glitch.
The eight algorithms and the function of knobs/CVs other than VC-DSP1 are as follows:
1. Spread Grains 1: Four grains are played from random positions in memory. Two grains are played from the left and the other two grains are played from the right. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls grain spread (random strength)
2. Four Spreads Grains 2: Similar to 1, but the grain size is the same with four grains. This reduces the stereo feeling and is ideal for rhythmic effects. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls grain spread
3. Pitch Modulated Grain1: Four grains are played from random positions in memory and the pitch is modulated by the LFO. Two grains are played from the left and the other two grains are played from the right. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls pitch modulation strength
4. Pitch Modulated Grain2: Similar to Program 3, but the pitch modulation strength is weaker than 3.
5. Three Pitched Grains: Three grains are played from random positions in memory. The pitch shift amount is the same for any grain. One grain plays from the left, the other plays from the right, and the other is played alternately left and right. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls pitch shift amount
6. Six Grains Stereo: Six grains are played from random positions in memory. VC-DSP2 controls three grain sizes, VC-DSP3 controls the remaining three grain sizes
7. Three Flying Grains: Three grains are played from random positions in memory. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls panning modulation
8. Three Modulated Grains: Three grains are played from random positions in memory. VC-DSP2 controls grain size, VC-DSP3 controls grain size modulation
