MUSICAL FEATURES

Jena is a digital signal processing module that can be used as a wave shaper for CV and audio, as a digital oscillator, as a Walsh function generator, a rhythm generator, etc. Jena is a module that constitutes the Leibniz Binary Subsystem developed by XAOC Devices. In order to input and output 8-bit digital signals, input and output are performed from a 10-pin connector on the board instead of a normal jack. The analog signal passing through a normal patch cable isDreznoIs used to convert it to an 8-bit signal (so you need Drezno to use Jena).

Jena performs wave shaping on the input 8-bit signal by wave table lookup. This is a classical waveform conversion method that uses a digital wavetable to convert the waveform by specifying the phase in the selected waveform according to the value of the input signal and outputting according to it. It is also possible to transform CV.

The wavetable that contains the waveforms for conversion is called a bank, and Jena contains a total of 15 banks. The first eleven banks (0-9 and A) are designed with audio signal conversion in mind, allowing for a variety of wave shaping. The remaining banks contain wavetables suitable for outputting rhythms and CVs. The transition between waveforms in the wavetable morphs smoothly, and the last waveform and the first waveform are connected continuously, so there is no break in the waveform.

The bank and the waveforms in the bank are determined by the encoder on the left. Press the encoder to switch the selection between bank and waveform, and turn the encoder to change. The Phase knob controls which part of the wavetable waveform to use for the start. Bank, waveform and phase can all be controlled by CV.

The 8-bit signal processed by Jena is output for each bit from the eight gate outputs on the front panel. When the Link button is ON, the processed signal is output from the OUT pin on the board, and when the Link button is OFF, the signal to the IN pin that does not pass through JENA can be output from the OUT pin as it is. At this time, the signal processed by Jena is output from the gate output jack on the entire surface.

Press and hold the encoder to enter the setting mode, where you can turn the encoder to change the following two settings.
  • Clock switching:  Selects whether the clock used by Jena is an internal clock or an external clock input via the IN pin. The internal clock is as fast as 2Mhz, so it is convenient when you want to modulate Jena parameters without adjusting to the external clock
  • SYNCHRONOUS mode Switching ASYNCHRONOUS mode:  ASYNCHRONOUS mode is the exact operation specification described above, and is useful when processing external signals. The SYNCHRONOUS mode analyzes the input signal and outputs a wavetable waveform with the same period as the signal. This makes it possible to create waveforms that do not have the discontinuity that often occurs with simple wavetable output. The disadvantage is that there is a time lag due to analysis, and it may not be possible to immediately follow the pitch or waveform change of the input signal.
